One of the great film successes of the 1960s, containing possibly the best performance of Audrey Hepburn's career.
Warm-hearted, tragic and extraordinarily funny in turn, this bitter-sweet, scatterbrained entertainment pulls pretty well every emotional string.
The wandering spirit of this wonderful, invigorating picture is enchantingly captured by Hepburn, at her wistful best, and George Peppard: their offbeat romance makes director Blake Edwards' castings seem perfection.
Among other highlights: Hepburn, as the kooky Holly Golightly, using her own voice to sing Moon River (which won an Oscar for the best song of the year); the final chase in the rain after the beloved Cat; and the fresh and delightfully relaxed scene in the jeweller's shop.
Mickey Rooney, John McGiver (as the deadpan jewellery salesman) and Buddy Ebsen also score; but this is Hepburn's show.
