American Graffiti

A long time before Star Wars, and definitely in a galaxy far, far away, George Lucas wrote and directed this vibrantly nostalgic comedy drama. Set in 1962 California and to a soundtrack chock-a-block with memorable tunes, it stars Richard Dreyfuss, a pre-Happy Days Ron Howard, Paul Le Mat and Charlie Martin Smith as four high-school friends hitting town for a last wild night together. Look out for Harrison Ford in his first role as a Stetson-wearing road hog.

Full of warmth, atmospheric colour and the understanding of a particular generation, George Lucas' pre Star Wars hit captures with uncanny accuracy the early Sixties and the misadventures of a series of young people on the threshold of adult life.

Edgy camerawork lends the film an intimate immediacy and the performances of Richard Dreyfuss, Ronny Howard, Paul LeMat and Charlie Martin Smith are without flaw.

You may also spot early appearances by Kathleen Quinlan, Harrison Ford and (fleetingly) Suzanne Somers and Kay Lenz.

Stay tuned for the last few frames, which detail the fates of the main characters, tying together the loose ends of the plot in poignant fashion.
