The third and last Sergio Leone/Clint Eastwood Western and arguably the best. It's long and rambling but always interesting and has a powerful trio of stars in Eastwood, Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef. They're all on the trail of a hoard of gold and they cross, double cross and cheat each other right up to the tense if protracted climax - a three-cornered shoot-out in a cemetery. A sprawling tale set during the American Civil War, the film looks very impressive (it was Leone's biggest-budget film at that time). Eastwood is the grim man with no name again but he's positively angelic compared to the ugly, grasping and amoral Wallach and the cold and sadistic Van Cleef. Full of vivid and well-remembered images and boasting a wonderful Ennio Morricone score.
