Julia Roberts stars in this entertaining and sometimes suspenseful dark conspiracy thriller based on a bestseller by John Grisham. The complex story is rather slow to start, but once Roberts finds herself on the run from sinister government men, things become edge-of-seat exciting. She plays a law student who writes a brief - The Pelican Brief of the title - that inadvertently stumbles upon the truth about the recent assassinations of two supreme court judges, and the finger of blame points directly to the White House. With nowhere to turn, her only help comes in the form of political investigative journalist Denzel Washington... Director Alan J Pakula is a dab hand at this kind of thriller and he certainly hasn't lost his touch.
