A womanising, high-voltage preacher in the Elmer Gantry mould (Robert Duvall) clobbers and kills his wife's lover with a baseball bat and flees the state. Gradually establishing a church in rural Louisiana, he praises the Lord while retribution waits to catch up with him. Despite a terrific performance by Duvall, notably in the closing scenes, it's hard to see many people actually wanting to catch this film, which is 90 per cent glory-glory and hallelujah, while its characters, especially the women - Farrah Fawcett (as Duvall's wife) and Miranda Richardson (the gal he courts) - remain rootless and unformed.
