There aren't many films for pre-school kids, but surely they deserve something better than this. Fans won't want to miss the film debut of the seven-foot-tall maroon felt dinosaur, but others should keep well away. Barney's movie has colourful settings all right, at a farm, a parade, a circus, a French restaurant and a woodland bird house, and would like to be a mix of Willy Wonka and the Wizard of Oz. Alas, it lacks the talent and know-how to get there. The songs are poor, and poorly sung by an energetic but under-talented cast. I guess it's no good saying that, if its toy suddenly grew into a seven-foot monster the average three-year-old would run for its life, since Barney clearly has a fan club of minor proportions; here he pursues a huge egg which is set to give birth to a wishmaster - a very anti-climactic moment when it comes. Some charm and chuckles for children; agony for adults.
