The Avengers

Offbeat action adventure based on the cult TV series, starring Ralph Fiennes as secret agent John Steed and Uma Thurman as his slinky sidekick, Dr Emma Peel. In a rare villanous role, Sean Connery plays the megalomaniac who intends to takes the world by storm - literally - by controlling the weather. Surely shum mishtake?!

The Avengers

Despite big, stylish sets and nifty-looking cars, this dire big-budget ($60million) remake of the Sixties TV hit entirely fails to capture the series' engaging eccentricity.

A weedy, worried-looking Ralph Fiennes seems puzzled how to fit into Patrick Macnee's shoes as Steed, with America's Uma Thurman bland but attractive as his long-legged colleague Emma Peel.

Both stars are impossibly miscast, producing a soft centre in a marshmallow. Sean Connery spectacularly overplays his hand as their foe, a lunatic out to control the weather and turn Britain into an arctic wasteland unless he gets 10 per cent of the gross national product.

Comedy god Eddie Izzard appears a lot to no effect, but must be grateful he has no lines - at least in this cut.

The film feels as though it must have been half an hour longer at one time - but much thanks for its spectacular brevity.

Warners, wisely, provided no advance screenings for the critics, who dug this turkey out of their local cinemas and sliced it up anyway.

Instead of spending 90 minutes watching this drivel, go delouse the dog and hose out the wheelie bin. The time is much better spent doing that than suffering this rubbish. How Sean Connery etc could get themselves involved in this trash is beyond me.

I am a big Avengers fan and this film does not disapoint! Great music and great action, not to mention Uma thurman in a cat suit! Ralph Fiennes is a good main charecter and Sean Connery is also a great supporting character. Who ever the hell gave this film a one star rating should have his head on a pike.

This film is well, really, quite bad. But it is cool. It captures the mad 60s plots and has a truly classic villain in Sean Connery and a classy male hero (Ralph Fiennes). Mad but great fun!
