Robin Williams makes another attack on our tear ducts with this truth-based story about an unorthodox medical student. He discovers his unique ability to communicate with people and help them, only after attempting suicide and committing himself to a psychiatric hospital. Patch is convinced that laughter is the best medicine and makes himself the clown of wards to which he's technically denied access until his third year. Although at times the sentiment gets too much, Williams is a bit more successful here than with some of his more serious ventures, perhaps because he's allowed to mix his trademark humour in. Events are cunningly contrived by director Tom Shadyac to make you laugh and cry at the right times.
