Genteel British comedy in which characters are obviously just figments of someone's imagination. But although most of them are clearly unreal, they're also mostly charming, thanks to a talented cast that does its best to work wonders with inferior material. It's a resolutely good-hearted piece, with a little excitement thrown in towards the end, centring on the confusions and role-playing at a marriage bureau. The only surprises come in the credits: co-writer Lewis Gilbert was later to direct Reach for the Sky, Carve her Name With Pride, three James Bond films and Educating Rita; while director Terence Fisher went on to revive the Gothic horror genre with The Curse of Frankenstein and Dracula.
