Last but certainly not least of the eight cinema versions of the story about that put-upon lady of the title, whose fortunes go from bad to worse. The film builds up to an out-with-your-handkerchieves climax (Madame X being defended on a murder charge by her son, who knows her not) which is all the more effective being handled in a strictly old-fashioned manner. Turner is fabulous, especially in the latter half of the film when she is so much more impressive than one would have thought possible.
