Robert Donat oozes dignity as William Friese-Greene, inventor of the movie camera, whose life was, otherwise, full of hardships and disaster. The film, which was the industry's contribution to the Festival of Britain, has an appropriately stellar cast of actors who pop in for a few seconds in a well-mounted drama. Laurence Olivier, for example, has a highly amusing cameo as a policeman. Maria Schell and Margaret Johnston play Donat's two wives, and John Boulting directs with tact rather than inspiration. You may be surprised by the rather abrupt ending.
