A highly exploitative suspense story, recognisably from the blood-spattered hands of director Brian de Palma, who gave us Carrie, Scarface and The Untouchables. This is perhaps his most blatant homage to Hitchcock (and especially Psycho), though the master might shift uneasily in his grave at the long drawn-out tension, the flashy sex scenes and the four-letter words used for shock effect. Michael Caine, Angie Dickinson and Nancy Allen do sterling service above and beyond the call to keep the frenzied farrago ticking over; while the mechanics of suspense are worked quite well by the director and may frighten the easily scared quite badly.
