Top model Beverly Johnson made her screen debut as Michael Caine's wife in this pot-boiler about African slave-traders. Peter Ustinov and Omar Sharif produce familiar characterisations as the villains, while Rex Harrison and William Holden have little more than cameo roles. The action is in the safe hands of veteran director Richard Fleischer, and fans of vintage films will identify the swarthily portly figure of Eric Pohlmann in one of his last film performances. The script, however, is so bad that even Ustinov's over-acting can bring no spark to it. Caine looks as though he can't wait to move on to another, less embarrassing assignment.
