The actor and producer will always be associated with the sleeper hit horror classic The Evil Dead.
The movie, which Campbell financed to the tune of $350,000 with childhood friends Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, became a huge video hit in England before succeeding in America.
Campbell went on to reprise the role of Ashly 'Ash' J Williams in the sequel Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn was well as launching a career in firmly independent films.
Appearances included the horror thriller Maniac Cop and the sci-fi thriller Moontrap as well as the big budget superhero yarn Darkman with Liam Neeson.
In 1993, the Evil Dead team regrouped to make Army of Darkness and the Coen Brothers offered him a featured role in The Hudsucker Proxy.
Roles followed in Escape from LA and he also appeared in the hit US comedy Ellen as Ed Billick.
Campbell went on to work extensively in American TV before returning to the big screen in The Majestic as Roland the intrepid explorer.
In 2002, he had a cameo as a wrestling ring announcer in Raimi's Spider-Man (he also appeared as a snooty theatre usher in the sequel) and played Elvis Presley in the cult hit Bubba Ho-Tep.
