Richard Burton and Sophia Loren have the unenviable task of following in the footsteps of Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson in this rather stodgy remake of David Lean's classic 1945 story of illicit romance. Despite sincere performances, they can't erase our memories of the original. But then who could? Not only was the Forties' film (and that based on a Thirties' play by Noel Coward) a classic, but one rooted in its own time. This updated version makes an interesting comparison.
