Sean Connery turned his back on James Bond and the offer to star in (the forgettable) On Her Majesty's Secret Service to play Indian scout Moses Zebedee Carlin, alias Shalako, in this interesting, personable Spanish-shot Western with a fast, dust-rousing first hour in which Apaches besiege a party of European hunters (including Brigitte Bardot) who are well out of their depth in the Wild West. But a lot of time-wasting goes on the latter stages of the film, which bungles its climax and submits to a tame, dimly photographed ending. Connery, adding yet another nationality to his amazing gallery, is a suitably strong and silent hero, and Stephen Boyd so handsome a villain that it's no wonder Honor Blackman deserts husband Jack Hawkins to run off with him.
