An alien comes to Earth, takes human form and, with his superior technical knowledge, soon amasses a fortune. His aim is to find water for his arid home planet. David Bowie's somewhat other-worldly and ambiguous persona makes him perfect casting for the enigmatic alien in this curious, but adult sci-fi fantasy, and he is ably supported by Rip Torn, Candy Clark and Buck Henry. Director Nicolas Roeg has created an odd, but always fascinating film, which still has a strong cult following. As befits a former cinematographer (he worked on John Schlesinger's 1967 film Far from the Madding Crowd), Roeg's film is also visually arresting. Science-fiction it may be, but The Man Who Fell to Earth is light years away from Star Trek.
