This was the first attempt to bring Richmal Crompton's infamous ragged rascal of a schoolboy to the screen. Likeable and good fun, the film makes the mistake that all three `William' films made, by trying to drag in too much of a 'thriller' plot to the exclusion of the plethora of little incidents that made the books so readable. Dicky Lupino, from the famous acting family, makes a spirited William, and his cohort Ginger is played by a wide-eyed Roddy McDowall, who would soon achieve far grander stardom in Hollywood.
