A sentimental and nostalgic look at the lives of an average British family between the two world wars. David Lean's debut as a solo director was not his greatest critical success but it was hugely popular and, by toning down the more patronising aspects of Noël Coward's original play, Lean really captures the spirit of the people. Robert Newton gives one of his rare understated performances, as the father of the family.
