A murder mystery starring Anthony Hopkins, but far removed from the bloody world of Silence of the Lambs' cannibal serial killer Hannibal Lecter. Hopkins actually plays an ingenious double role, and relishes every moment on screen. In reality he's a brilliant but ruthless criminal attorney, plotting to murder his wife to avoid financial ruin through a messy divorce. But in witty, imaginary courtroom scenes, he engages in lively exchanges with his alter-ego, a prosecutor who punches holes in his every plan. That much under-used character actress Swoosie Kurtz has an amusing cameo in one of the plot's many twists. Not surprisingly, considering its writers are Columbo creators Richard Levinson and William Link, this telefilm is two cuts above the normal offerings in that field, delivering fiendishly clever and intellectually stimulating drama of a high order.
