The basic idea behind Switch is rather neat. Womanising Steve (Perry King) is murdered by three of his old girlfriends. Sent to Purgatory, he's given a chance to redeem himself by going back to Earth to find a woman who genuinely likes him. The catch? He wakes up to find he's a she (Ellen Barkin), and a very sexy one too! Sadly, the opportunity for some wryly observant comedy is completely missed by director Blake Edwards: what we end up with is forced humour typical of the director's latter days, lots of mugging and a good cast struggling with a poor script. A shame, as Barkin does her part as a-man-in-a-woman's-body role with some style. It's a pity director and script let her down. STAR SPOTS: Present-day stars Catherine Keener and Tea Leoni in tiny roles as, respectively, a secretary and a 'dream girl'.
