The actor/writer/director cut his teeth on American TV before making his feature debut with the comedy Good Burger in 1997.
However, it was with Varsity Blues starring Jon Voight and newcomer James Van Der Beek that he made his mark.
Subsequent movies included the comedy Ready to Rumble and the baseball drama Hardball with Keanu Reeves.
"Being 17 years old is really hard. I wouldn't want to be 17 again especially with the way the world is today."
As an actor, his roles were mainly confined to American TV although he did have a part in the action thriller Da Vinci's War.
Recent directing work has included the exam cheating drama A Perfect Score with Scarlett Johanssen.
