There was a 34-year wait for a sequel to the Elizabeth Taylor children's classic National Velvet, and after sitting through more than two hours of this inferior soap opera, you'll be wishing director/screenwriter Bryan Forbes had kept his hands off the story. Forbes' real-life wife, Nanette Newman plays the grown-up Velvet character, now living in England, and looking after an orphaned American niece (Tatum O'Neal). Distrust and animosity on the part of the girl soon melt away when they discover a mutual love of horses. But the film is marred by supremely banal dialogue, matched only by direction from a film-maker who, at this stage, seemed to have completely lost his once-subtle touch.
