Crime writer Michael Caine finds himself involved in murder and political intrigue when he is invited to write the biography of a has-been Hollywood movie gangster (Mickey Rooney) in this spoof thriller. Caine seems detached from all the goings-on, but Rooney gets his teeth into what was one of his best roles for years, and there's a rare latter-day appearance from Lizabeth Scott. . A patchy movie, but the bright patches are worth watching for.
