This teen black comedy has some ghoulishly gleeful plot developments, but there are too many times when its get-up-and-go seems to have got up and gone. Ethan Hawke is faintly irritating as the shy teen whose yen for his beautiful neighbour (Teri Polo) is seemingly satiated when his older brother lends him his car for a date. When the car turns out to have dead bodies in the boot, Hawke realises his brother is not what he seems and finds himself on the run. This combination of romance, comedy, thriller and road movie does work itself into a fine frenzy towards the climax, only to throw it all away on a muffed ending. B D Wong is outstanding in the supporting cast as a catlike Chinese Mafosio.
