This drugs movie is well-meaning and, in parts, well-performed, but its one-note march to death makes it a bit of a drag to watch. 'Have you seen Julian? ' is both its theme and its most often used line, as nice young college student McCarthy tries to help junkie ex-schoolfriend Downey, who stole the girlfriend (Gertz) who finds getting back together with McCarthy easier than giving up cocaine. Downey himself is well and truly in the clutches of the local pusher (Spader, whose oily crocodile is the best thing he does) to the tune of $50,000, and soon reduced to becoming a rent boy to stay even on the debt. A sad tale and one told without too much spark. McCarthy is overly mannered as the hero, Gertz offers the best display of cleavage since Raquel Welch quit the screen and Downey, acting them both out of sight, is effectively pathetic and drug-ridden as the elusive Julian.
