You've got to hand it to the French, when it comes to bizarre movie plotlines and weird crossover pictures they take the Palme d'Or. Witness this unclassifiable exhibit, spanning the road movie, thriller, fantasy and black comedy genres: Charlotte Gainsbourg plays (rather well, too) the heroine, a lonely girl in a seaside town who encounters battered bride Anouk Grinberg, the duo then heading off for a series of oddball sexual exploits. Naturally Gerard Depardieu is on hand to play their nemesis, Dr Worms, whose arrival in the plot opens a whole new can of worms. This bewildering and alienating film, made rather desperately by clever director Bertrand Blier, just goes to show that weird is sometimes just weird and not good and that, just occasionally, the French can make the most pretentious and awful films. Despite its distinguished cast, it's merci but non merci.
