West German director Percy Adlon's art house movie 'Sugarbaby' suffers considerably at the hands of director Paul Schneider in this Hollywood remake. A pre-diet Ricki Lake, in her first starring role in a TV movie, takes the Marianne Sägebrecht part as an overweight mortuary make-up artist looking for love. But whereas Adlon used offbeat humour and a distanced style to create atmosphere in his foreign-language film, this American version merely tells it straight. Lake, who later found fame in John Waters' cult movies 'Hairspray' and 'Cry-Baby', does well within the confines of this graceless and charmless sitcom-style telefilm.
