A lavish but ultimately disappointing historical drama, with much fictional content, detailing the tangled love life of the Emperor of France, Napoleon Bonaparte. Marlon Brando never wanted to play the Emperor, but owed 20th Century-Fox a movie and so reluctantly agreed to add star power to the overblown soap opera. His performance is the only good thing about the finished product, which relies on impure Hollywood fantasy for its plot. Co-starring are Jean Simmons in the title role and Merle Oberon as Josephine.
