A fascinating movie with a disappointing ending. It's a kind of surrealist film noir which opens with a destitute old woman dying on the street. From a letter found on her, a morgue attendant (Tyra Ferrell) begins to piece together the story of twin sons she gave away for adoption. Both have grown up to look like Matthew Modine; both hover dangerously on the edge of sanity. One is a mass of insecurities and strange aggression. The other is a gangster whose barely controlled violence brings him to the attention of a local crime kingpin. Stunningly well constructed, and studded with apposite lines, the film almost ascends the peaks of perfection before falling headlong into the pit of 'I don't know how to finish this, so let's close with a stunningly enigmatic shot' ending. Pity. QUOTE: 'My whole life seems to be taking place without me in it.'
