This spirited yarn, set first in India and then in a country north of the North-West Frontier, is based on a story by Rudyard Kipling and is generally regarded as among the best of director John Huston's latter-day films. And it gives splendid acting opportunities to Sean Connery and Michael Caine, who are compelling and amusing as the roguish central characters of the story who get involved with warring tribesmen. The background gives rise to plenty of local colour and exotic settings, thanks to splendid location work by Huston and his crew in Morocco.
