Atmospheric and compelling film of Daphne Du Maurier's best-seller, a perfect example of the way they just don't make 'em any more. It was Richard Burton's first film in Hollywood and although, understandably, he didn't register too well in a slightly weak role which is always subsidiary to Olivia de Havilland's splendid Rachel, his next two performances (in The Robe and The Desert Rats) established him as powerful actor of the widest range. The mood of My Cousin Rachel is magnificently all of a piece, achieved by the combined efforts of director Henry Koster, composer Franz Waxman and photographer Joseph La Shelle. With few equals in the art of black and white camerawork, La Shelle already had an Oscar under his belt for his superb work in another film about a mystery woman - Laura.
