Mr Smith Goes to Washington

James Stewart stars as a naive young senator whose idealism puts him at odds with his crooked backers and the devious types in Congress. Okay, so it's a little corny but Frank Capra's magnificent ode to the 'little guy' earned eight Oscar nominations and remains one of cinema's enduring classics, with splendid performances all round. Not even an over-hasty climax can rob this great comedy-drama of a five star rating.

The Washington press corps took offence at what they believed to be a negative portrayal in the film. Hence many early reviews of the film were quite negative.

A young James Stewart, perfectly cast as the heart-breakingly sincere country boy, is delightfully teamed with lovely Jean Arthur, a city slicker secretary with a well-concealed hear Mr Smith Goes To Washington t of gold.

Edward Arnold and Claude Rains make a formidable pair of scheming villains, but Harry Carey's late appearance (as the Senate president) almost steals the whole show.
