When one of his daughters dies in an accident, Mark (Patrick Bergin), unable to express his emotions, throws himself into his work. But he keeps finding hints of Nikki's continuing presence. These clues lead him to a blind spinster who lives in an old mansion surrounded by woodlands in which exist the lost souls of children. But is Nikki among them? This tale is updated from a short story by Rudyard Kipling. But the updating, transferring it to the American Deep South and extending it to feature length only serve to harm the ethereal tale. Bergin and Vanessa Redgrave as the blind spiritualist are good - better, indeed, than the film.
