Simon Baker

Born: July 30 1969
Where: Launceston, Tasmania, Australia

The former teen surfer and water polo player made his big screen debut in Curtis Hanson's Oscar-winning LA Confidential.

Raised in Australia, his early TV appearances included Home & Away and Heartbreak High.

After relocating to LA, he landed the part in LA Confidential before winning roles in the low-budget features Most Wanted, Restaurant (with Adrien Brody) and the crime drama Judas Kiss.

"If you can't be proud of what you do, go and sell shoes. Do something else."

In 1999, he starred in Ang Lee's critically acclaimed Ride With The Devil and took a lead role in the comedy Sunset Strip in 2000.

The following year he landed a Golden Globe nomination for the American TV series The Guardian as a child lawyer.

On the big screen, he appeared in the lacklustre Affair of the Necklace and starred opposite Frances O'Connor in Book of Love.

Recent work includes the American remake of the Japanese horror-thriller Ring Two with Naomi Watts.

Upcoming projects include Land of the Death - the fourth instalment of George A Romero's zombie series.
