This road movie has so much going for it, that it's a pity to admit that, in the final analysis, it isn't as good as it could have been. Tom Selleck stars as an ageing rodeo star who picks up Ruby Jean, a young black hitchhiker who starts to change his outlook on life. Selleck is well cast and gives a fine performance, the film looks great and the rodeo sequences are exciting. But Rebekah Johnson as Ruby Jean is the weak link, giving a consistently poor performance in what is the pivotal role of the film. A shame, but this film does have its compensations and fans of Selleck won't be entirely disappointed.
