Nightmare family reunion is on the menu here, of the kind that almost never happens in real life. Smart lines and family secrets are on the side plates to the Thanksgiving turkey, as a representative family, consisting of single-mum daughter (Holly Hunter), gay son (Robert Downey Jr) a stay-in-the-small-town married daughter (Cynthia Stevenson) converge with or without partners on the home of chain-smoking mum (Anne Bancroft) and overweight dad (Charles Durning) who's compos mentis in all respects except cutting the turkey with a knife. Everyone behaves unbelievably indecorously and Stevenson and husband Steve Guttenberg predictably storm out. Hunter falls headlong for Downey's (non-gay) companion (Dylan McDermott) and everything ends in a haze of happiness. Just like real life. Not.
