Theresa Randle is very engaging here as a struggling New York actress who's forced to take a job as a sex-phone worker, then gets hooked on it. Spike Lee's easy-going comedy drama represents a useful change of pace for a director who often wears his heart on his sleeve, but the dullish script has more than its fair share of flat, joke-less and insight-free stretches. There's a strong whiff of New York and the sleazy milieu of the sex trade, and film fans might want to check out a trendily eccentric cast that includes Quentin Tarantino, Madonna, John Turturro and Ron Silver. Not Lee's best movie, though.
