Roald Dahl's dark humour is very much to the fore in this colourful adaptation of his best-selling story.
Mara Wilson is wonderful as the little girl with magic powers who gets even with the monstrous grown-ups - played larger than life by Danny DeVito (who also directed), Rhea Perlman and Pam Ferris (almost unrecognisable from her role in Where the Heart Is) as the child-hating headmistress.
A delightfully twisted fairy-tale, and not just for kids.
