A massive and unexpected popular hit, this is Wes Craven's slightly (but only slightly) joky version of a Halloween-style horror film.
Full of in-references to horror movies, the story gives Drew Barrymore a juicy 10 minutes before she becomes the latest victim of a maniacal slasher wearing a 'Father Death' costume, her dying cries heard on the cellular phone to which she has clung instead of the kitchen knife with which she was defending herself!
As the gutted body count mounts, it becomes apparent that the chief stalkee is Sidney (Neve Campbell) whose mother was stabbed to death a year before by a killer Sid identified, now languishing on Death Row.
It's pretty slow in between the murders, but there are enough of those to keep things thumping along most of the time, even if the plot has more holes than the poor victims...
