A gory science-fiction-cum-horror story, somewhere between The Shining, Alien and Hellraiser.

The Event Horizon of the title is a deep space vessel (actually modelled on Notre Dame Cathedral! ) researching faster-than-light travel.

It has now disappeared into outer space, and a rescue ship is dispatched to find it, which it does, somewhere beyond Neptune.

Laurence Fishburne and his crew board the spacecraft - to find themselves trapped on a deserted ship at the gateway to Hell...

Hi-tech effects, great Gothic space sets and highly skilled editing apart, the ensuing plot proves to be standard haunted house-style hokum, albeit with a juicy 'mad boffin' role for Sam Neill as the ship's creator.

Kathleen Quinlan is also very good as a technician who falls victim to the hallucinations its atmosphere induces.
