Since World War Two this country has been bombarded with feel-bad gloomy diatribes on the wretched lot of the working classes. It's now the job of soap operas to propagate this guilt trip, but it used to be down to such films as this grim and angry drama (from John Brophy's novel) set against the rough, poverty-stricken atmosphere of Thirties' Liverpool. The excellent, eye-rolling Robert Newton is the drunken, clichéd villain of the piece while Kathleen Harrison puts in another of her little hard-done-by-women turns to perfection. Look out for an early appearance from Richard Burton in only his third film. Depressing but atmospheric and good.
