Washington Square

Jennifer Jason Leigh stars as an awkward heiress who falls for a charming fortune hunter (Ben Chaplin) against the wishes of her father (Albert Finney). But at least aunt Maggie Smith approves! Joining the classy company of Portrait of a Lady, The Wings Of The Dove and The Golden Bowl, this is a rich period adaptation of another Henry James tale mixing cruel high society with star-crossed romance.

Jennifer Jason Leigh is superb as a shy, plain, rich young woman who lives in 19th-century New York City with her stern doctor father (Albert Finney) and is courted by penniless, fortune-hunting charmer Ben Chaplin, upsetting dad but delighting her aunt (Maggie Smith).

This richly enjoyable, top-quality period drama is an impressively sumptuous, intense and exquistely acted adaptation of the Henry James classic novel, previously filmed in 1949 as The Heiress with Olivia de Havilland.
