The actor first attracted attention for his support role in the drama The Emperor's Club with Kevin Kline.
However, it was with The Girl Next Door opposite Elisha Cuthbert as an ex-porn star that he really earned the attention of the public.
The son of a business consultant and a pop-up book artist, Hirsch first carved out a career on American television.
Early TV roles include the movies Gargantua and the young Harry Houdini in Houdini as well as making his big screen debut in the drama The Dangerous Lives of the Altar Boys.
He also appeared on Third Rock from the Sun and Sabrina, The Teenager Witch before landing the role in The Emperor's Club.
In 2004, he starred in the dark drama Imaginary Heroes alongside Sigourney Weaver and Jeff Daniels and in skateboard saga Lords of Dogtown.
Hirsch appeared alongside Bruce Willis in the crime drama Alpha Dog and went onto deliver an acclaimed performance in Sean Penn's Into The Wild.
