America 1980. The disco craze is at its height - and about to crash from it. Teens and twentysomethings fight to get into a hugely popular club run by swarthy (and shady) Bernie (David Thornton). Alice (Chloe Sevigny), bright but insecure, and Charlotte (Kate Beckinsale), a shallow bitch with wounding wit, are assistants at a publishing house. Jimmy (Mackenzie Astin), with an ad agency, finds favour running out with Des (Chris Eigeman) who helps run the club. Josh (Matt Keeslar), a handsome assistant DA, is in charge of an operation to burst Bernie - and the club. There's not as much action in this talky, well-set piece as you might expect, but director Whit Stillman's dry and literary script does enough to hold your attention, and the progress of the story, as partners switch and disco falls, is smoothly constructed. Beckinsale's American accent is good and so is her performance. She has the showiest role and steals the film. TRIVIA: Beckinsale sings Amazing Grace on the film soundtrack.
