This is a rock-hard crime thriller on a familiar theme - FBI man infiltrates the Mob in the hope of bringing gangsters to justice. With Johnny Depp as the cop and Al Pacino as his criminal pal and mentor, this works a treat as an action drama, too. It's a fine vehicle for Depp, while Pacino gives a stunning performance that allows us to see every facet of the man passed over for high Mob office in favour of the thuggish Michael Madsen. Inspired by true events, this makes for great, sometimes well-hard, entertainment. It was quite a change for British director Mike Newell, better known for his comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral.
