The onetime dancer reached an international audience as Bond villain Le Chiffre in Daniel Craig's debut as 007 Casino Royale.
He played a banker for global terrorists whose distinquishing feature was a tear duct that wept blood.
He had earlier attracted widespread attention for his role as Niels in Susanne Bier's dogme drama Open Hearts.
A graduate of Arhus Theatre School, he was a permanent member of the Dr Dante company and starred in Kunst and Romeo & Juliet.
He first came to attention on the big screen in the critically-acclaimed drugs movie Pusher in 1996.
Next came the horror drama Breeder and various roles including Shake It and I Am Dina.
Following Open Hearts he worked on the European co-production Wilbur Wants To Kill Himself and the comedy De Gronne Slagterre.
In 2004, he starred in the swords'n'sorcery epic Arthur and also returned to the Pusher series with With Blood On My Hands.
Recent work includes the rarefied position of playing a Bond villain - Le Chiffre in Casino Royale.
