Whoopi Goldberg made too many films for her own good in the mid-Nineties but at least this gimmicky comedy, though overlong, is one of the better ones. Unable to make way in the man-driven Wall Street, Whoopi finds herself sidelined by wolfish associate Tim Daly, who not only steals her promotion, but leaves her in the cold. It's perhaps not surprising Whoopi gets shafted, since she looks more like a bag lady than a corporate raider, but she's determined to fight back. Inventing a white male partner, and investing in her ex-colleague's dowdy PA (Dianne Wiest), Whoopi puts the world to rights and the worms to flight - until she has to produce her sleeping partner. This is the cue for some amazing prosthetics that make her look like Rod Steiger, but also a passage where the film is at its slowest and most squirm-worthy. There's a fun last reel, though, even if it's a long time getting there, and a great part for Wiest as the mouse that roars.
