Although perhaps not quite as good as its young director thinks it is, this is still a smart and spiky romantic comedy that's streets ahead of the contemporary (and more highly praised) She's the One. The leading characters have charm and personality to spare, in Emma-Kate Coghlan's tale of the interweaving destinies of five college students, headed by Alice Garner, who'll amuse you with her deadpan research on her long-delayed thesis, Doris Day as Feminist Warrior. Her co-stars, though, Frances O'Connor and Radha Mitchell, have since overtaken her on the international scene. It's familiar stuff, but on the whole fun to be with.
