Gary Oldman's directing debut is a grim, unremitting look at life on the bottom rung.

Oldman also wrote the screenplay, which is loosely based on his own South London upbringing. Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke give stunning performances as the damaged couple at the centre of a dysfunctional family.

Alcoholism, domestic violence and drug abuse all contribute to tear them and their family apart and some scenes are very difficult to watch.

But the script is rooted firmly in reality and Oldman's direction makes you feel you have a window on harsh reality.

An impressive, but ultimately depressing film, with much to admire, but little to enjoy.
